Smoke & Soot Byproduct Testing
Post-fire evaluation of smoke residue, soot, char, and ash in affected structures.
After a fire — whether a kitchen incident, a structure fire, or a wildfire miles away — combustion byproducts settle throughout buildings: soot on surfaces, char and ash in carpets and contents, and acidic residues inside HVAC systems and wall cavities. These residues are corrosive, odorous, and carry carcinogenic compounds that outlast the visible damage.
Our testing determines how far smoke actually traveled and whether cleanup actually worked. We sample surfaces throughout affected (and supposedly unaffected) areas, use laboratory analysis to distinguish fire-related residue from ordinary household dust, and document everything in a report built to support insurance claims and reoccupancy decisions.
Why this testing matters
Residue outlasts visible damage
Soot and combustion byproducts remain hazardous and corrosive long after odors fade and surfaces are wiped down.
Wildfire smoke intrusion
Homes far from a fire line still take in smoke through vents and gaps. Testing determines whether residues actually reached your interior and contents.
Insurance claims
Carriers want objective evidence of smoke impact. Laboratory-confirmed sampling documents the true extent — protecting you from an undervalued claim.
HVAC contamination
Duct systems collect and redistribute smoke residues every time the system runs. Testing establishes whether duct cleaning is genuinely needed.
Verify restoration work
Post-cleaning testing confirms restoration crews actually removed the contamination before you sign off on the job.
Health protection
Combustion residues contain PAHs and other compounds you don't want your family in contact with — especially children crawling on affected floors.
What's included
- Visual assessment of affected and adjacent areas
- Surface sampling for soot, char, and ash
- Laboratory analysis distinguishing fire residue from background dust
- HVAC system assessment where indicated
- Mapped extent of smoke impact
- Insurance-ready written documentation
Our process
- 1
Damage walkthrough
We assess the fire's path and the likely spread of smoke, including rooms that appear untouched.
- 2
Surface sampling
Tape-lift and wipe samples are collected from representative surfaces across the property with chain-of-custody handling.
- 3
Laboratory analysis
An accredited lab identifies combustion byproducts and distinguishes genuine fire residue from ordinary dust.
- 4
Documentation & guidance
Your report maps where smoke residues are present, supports your insurance claim, and defines what cleaning is needed — and where it isn't.
Frequently asked questions
The fire was blocks away — could my home still be affected?
Possibly. Wildfire smoke enters through ventilation and building gaps, and residues settle on interior surfaces and in ducts. Testing gives you a definitive answer rather than a guess.
Will this help with my insurance claim?
Yes — that's one of the most common reasons clients call us. Independent, lab-backed documentation of smoke impact is far stronger evidence than photographs and odor descriptions.
Should I test before or after cleaning?
Ideally both: before, to document the extent for your claim and scope the cleaning; after, to verify the restoration actually worked. If you can only do one, we'll advise based on where your claim stands.
